LOOKING FOR BIPOC WRITERS.
RIZE is a POC led non-profit platform committed to reclaiming narrative power. RIZE exists to uplift the work of creators of culture and color whose perspectives are often stolen, tokenized, or erased by dominant media. We encourage pitches from QTBIPOC people, and others from historically oppressed communities.
RIZE covers the thoughts, feelings, traditions and beliefs birthed from each branch of art and culture, which are interconnected.
Art: Visual art, such as: ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, even tattoo artists. Art produced by digital means like: animation, film, and graphic design as well. Fashion and performance art like: aerialists, dance, theatre, spoken word as well.
We are always looking for music of every genre as well as festivals, concerts and even video game analysis, reviews and/or creators.
Culture: Culture covers the customs, traditions, values, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group. Within each form of art there is a cultural identity. Art has always been a reflection of the world that we live in. Artists are constantly making political statements about their views in their art. Take this into consideration when pitching and account for popular culture, consumer culture, ethnicity, and counterculture views.
Very broad. We are talking about cultural identity, changes in direction or movements happening within an art form. This also gives us the opportunity to talk about political current events, nationality, sexuality, ethnicity, gender, social class and ability in ways that intersect.
Cannabis: Cannabis reporting is no longer niche to High Times. Cannabis has been part of art and unique cultures since far before it was ever legalized, so it is only right that as the culture grows that RIZE centers the people of color and culture who made that progress possible. Product reviews will be reserved for companies willing to advertise with us but feel free to pitch stories about the changing world in relation to cannabis — politically, economically, relative to race relations and arrests, incarceration, charity, beauty etc.
Pitches should clearly and concisely convey the story you plan to write and why it matters. The best pitches display promising pre-reporting and a knowledge of the topic as well as a sense of the angle or insight you plan to pursue. If your story depends on access to a person or company, you should say whether you have obtained it already (and if not, what your prospects are).
What we’re not looking for are requests from content marketers or overseas specialists looking for backlinks or advertising on established blogs. We’re all experienced writers and we’ve seen it all.
We are looking for news reporting, larger feature stories, op-eds, in depth analysis, personal essays, photo essays and more. We want to hear your unique and creative ideas.
